Lock Down Spring Measuring Guide
Make sure you’re ordering the right 117mm spring. See our lock down spring measuring guide for details on how to measure your existing spring. Our support team is here if you have any questions.
Standard Gauge 117mm Recliner Lock Down Spring
If your recliner footrest won’t stay closed or pops open unexpectedly, a worn or broken lock down spring is often the culprit. This standard gauge lock down spring is an equivalent replacement for most modern recliners, designed to lock your footrest securely in place when closed. Some older recliners use a more heavy-duty spring which we also sell. Replace your broken lock down spring with this replacement to regain that satisfying “click” when locking your footrest.
117mm Recliner Lockdown Springs - Standard and Heavy Gauge Options
Repair your manual recliner with our 117mm Lockdown Springs, designed to lock and hold the footrest securely in the closed position. When you close your footrest and hear that “click,” that’s the lockdown spring engaging to keep your footrest firmly closed. If your footrest keeps bouncing open or won’t stay closed, it’s likely due to a worn or broken lockdown spring.
Our lockdown springs are available in two wire gauges to suit your preference:
- 117mm Standard Lockdown Spring: Features a 2.1mm wire gauge and comes with a red foam insert. Found on most modern recliners.
- 117mm Heavy Gauge Lockdown Spring: Features a thicker 2.4mm wire gauge and a yellow foam insert. Found on older model recliner and cross-compatible for anyone wanting a stronger replacement.
Both springs are interchangeable and fit the mechanism the same way, allowing you to choose based on your preference for strength and durability.

How To Tutorial
How To Tutorial
Replacing the lock down spring is a simple DIY task that ensures your recliner footrest stays closed until you’re ready to recline. Follow the steps below to safely remove the old spring and install a new one (either standard or heavy gauge).
Step 1: Prepare Your Recliner
- Lay a drop sheet to protect the floor and carefully tilt the recliner on its side or front, using safe lifting techniques.
- Gather pliers and any other tools you may need for the task.
Step 2: Remove the Old Spring
- Locate the broken or worn lock down spring under the seat. If it’s missing, refer to another recliner (if available) for placement.
- Open the footrest using the handle or lever and carefully unhook the spring with pliers. Tip: Take a photo for reference before removing the spring.
Step 3: Install the New Spring
- Hook one end of the replacement spring onto the seat frame or designated peg.
- Stretch the spring with pliers and secure the other end to the footrest mechanism. Use the hole or peg with visible signs of wear for correct positioning. Caution: The spring is under tension, so handle it carefully.
Step 4: Test and Adjust
- Close the footrest and ensure it locks securely with a firm “click.”
- If it doesn’t lock properly, try repositioning the spring in a different hole.
- Set the recliner upright and fully test the footrest by opening and closing it.
