Description
Genuine La‑Z‑Boy Dual‑Actuator Support Tube – 552 mm Wide (12970490‑00)
Restore factory‑smooth motion to any Power XR or XR Plus recliner that uses the mid‑width 552 mm (21 ¾ in) seat box. This support‑tube assembly is the exact unit La‑Z‑Boy welds in at the factory: heavy‑gauge Ø35 mm steel, precision‑aligned clevis ears (Ø10 mm) for the two actuators, and crush‑sleeved carriage‑bolt pockets that stop the frame twisting under load—no drilling, welding or special tools required.
Common Failures & Warning Signs With This Tube
A fatigued or damaged cross‑tube lets the seat box “flex”, throws the two actuators out of alignment and eventually cripples the whole mechanism. Look for any of these red flags—if you spot one, the support tube is almost certainly the culprit and should be replaced before it damages the actuators or side‑plates. Or another common failure is cracked or broken welds around the clevis mounts, once again a replacement support tube is required.

Step‑by‑Step Installation Guide – Safe DIY Replacement
Replacing the cross‑tube is straightforward, but a few safety measures will make the job easier and prevent damage to your recliner or flooring.
- Prepare your workspace. Clear the area, roll away rugs, and lay down a dust sheet or old blanket to protect both the floor and the upholstery fabric.
- Practise safe lifting. An average La‑Z‑Boy Power XR weighs 40 – 50 kg. If in any doubt, ask a second person to help you tilt or move the chair. Bend your knees, keep your back straight, and lift from the frame—never by the arms or footrest.
- Disconnect the power. Unplug the transformer from the wall and unplug the two‑pin lead from the chair. If a battery pack is fitted, remove it.
- Tip the chair forward onto its front edge. With the backrest locked, gently roll the recliner nose‑down onto the dust sheet so the underside is fully exposed.
- Take a quick reference photo. Use your phone to snap the actuator positions, cable routings, and zip‑tie locations. Photos make re‑assembly stress‑free.
- Free the wiring. Clip and discard the zip‑ties that secure the motor cables to the existing tube. Unplug each actuator harness where it meets the “Y” lead if access is tight.
- Release the actuators. Remove the actuator pins and linking rods at the clevis on the support tube. Support each motor as you pull the rods and let them rest safely on the dust sheet.
- Remove the outer‑arm upholstery card (if fitted). Many XR frames have a cardboard dust panel stapled over the tube. Use a flat screwdriver or staple puller to lift the staples and fold the card out of the way.
- Undo the support‑tube bolts. Using a T30 Torx driver, remove the two pan‑head bolts on each side (four bolts total) that secure the tube.
- Install the new support tube. Align the crush sleeves with the side‑plate slots, insert the Torx bolts from inside the arm carcass, and finger‑tighten. Before torquing, make sure the bolt are straight, then tighten to specification.
- Re‑fit actuators & tidy the wiring. Position each actuator, insert the clevis linking rods with the supplied nylon top‑hat spacers, then route the motor cables neatly along the new tube and secure with fresh zip‑ties—keeping clear of moving parts.
- Fold the dust card back into place. Close up the upholstery and restaple it. Tip the recliner upright, plug the power lead back into the chair and the wall socket.
- Test & final safety check. Run the chair through a full cycle. Listen for smooth, even motion. With the footrest fully closed, reach underneath and confirm no cables are pinched or rubbing.
That’s it—job done in under 15 minutes! If you run into anything unexpected, snap a photo and contact our tech team for quick advice.

FAQs
FAQs
How can I tell if my La‑Z‑Boy needs a new support tube?
If the chair twists while reclining, one actuator stalls, or you hear creaks or pops from the frame, the cross‑tube may be bent or its clevis brackets cracked. Tip the chair forward and inspect the tube: a visible bow, cracked weld or loose Torx bolts confirms it’s due for replacement.
Which width do I order—will part 12970490‑00 fit my chair?
Measure the clear inside distance between the two mechanism side plates. A width of 552 mm (21 ¾ in) means 12970490‑00 is correct. If you have a different size we do not stock these.
Can I install these myself, or do I need a technician?
Installation is a safe DIY task that typically takes 15 minutes. Disconnect the power, tip the chair forward, remove four bolts, swap the tube, re‑fit the actuators, tidy the wiring and test. No drilling, welding or specialist tools—just follow our step‑by‑step guide and practise safe lifting.
How do I know if my legrest extension arms are bent or damaged?
Common signs include a crooked or uneven footrest, noisy extension, or stiff/restricted movement when reclining. If your footrest no longer extends smoothly, the arms may be bent and need replacing.
Are these genuine La-Z-Boy parts?
Yes, these are genuine OEM La-Z-Boy parts, not aftermarket copies. Manufactured to original specifications for the perfect fit and long-lasting performance.
