Description

Universal 500mm Recliner Mechanism Kit with Full Electrics – Flat Pack Kit

This is the complete 63-piece kit to fully replace your recliner’s mechanism and power system. Based on the Leggett & Platt 400EZ series, it features a 500mm seat width (measured between inside seat rails), heavy-gauge black powder-coated steel, Delrin™ bushes and machine-pressed rivets. The mechanism is designed with a close-to-wall action and rated for up to 181kg total load (suitable for users up to 160kg).

Supplied as a flat-pack kit, it includes everything required to assemble a new mechanism and electrics using only basic DIY tools. This universal design can be fitted to single recliners, twin chairs, 3-seaters or sectional lounges, and is suitable for either left- or right-hand installations.

Measuring Your Seat Frame Width

To confirm compatibility, measure the seat frame width between the inside edges of the timber or metal rails that run front-to-back of the chair. This kit fits a 500 mm width. If your seat width measures wider, see our 700 mm version (click here).

What’s Included in the 63-Piece Full Kit

This kit contains all structural parts as well as the full electric setup, so you have everything required for a complete replacement. Parts supplied include:

  • 2 × Side actions
  • 3 × Stabiliser bars (2 with flat ends, 1 folded 90° ends)
  • 2 × Base bars
  • 1 × Square drive shaft and support brace
  • Pair of drive link brackets
  • 2 × KD backrest brackets
  • 1 × Actuator end bracket with fixings
  • 4 × Glide feet with lock nuts
  • All bolts, nuts and fittings (including 6 additional bolts for actuator mounting)

Why Replace a Recliner Mechanism?

Recliner mechanisms and power systems are subject to heavy use, and common failures include bent frames, worn rivets, broken stabilisers, or faulty actuators and transformers. By replacing both the structural mechanism and the electrics together, you restore your recliner to a like-new condition with the strength and reliability of a brand-new unit.

DIY Friendly – Assemble and Save

Supplied flat pack, this mechanism requires basic handyman skills to assemble. Basic instructions are included and all parts are supplied. With only a socket set, you can build and install this mechanism in about 45 minutes. By doing it yourself, you can save $$$ on costly repairs and enjoy the satisfaction of restoring your furniture.

How To Install – 500mm Universal Leggett & Platt Recliner Mechanism (Full Electrics)

Tools required: Socket set with 13mm socket, spanner, screwdriver, pliers (for zip ties).
Assembly time: Approx. 45 minutes.
Important: Assemble the mechanism outside the chair frame. Fit the actuator and wiring before installing the mechanism into the furniture.

Step One – Lay Out and Identify Parts

  • 2 × side actions
  • 2 × base bars
  • 3 × stabiliser bars (2 with flat ends for front/rear, 1 with 90° folded ends for centre)
  • 1 × square drive shaft
  • 1 × support brace
  • Pair of drive link brackets
  • 1 × actuator end bracket
  • 2 × KD backrest brackets
  • 4 × glide feet with lock nuts
  • All bolts and nuts supplied (no washers required)
  • Actuator, 2-button wired remote, 29V 2.0A transformer, 2.3m OI extension lead, AU wall plug

Step Two – Assemble the Base Frame

Position the base bars between the side actions. Use 4 × 13mm bolts (2 each side) in the second set of holes, not the ones nearest the edge. Leave finger-tight for alignment.

Step Three – Fit the Stabiliser Bars

Front and rear: fit the flat-ended stabilisers. Centre (just behind the drive shaft): fit the stabiliser with 90° folded ends. Each stabiliser uses 4 × 13mm bolts (2 each end).

Step Four – Install the Drive Shaft and Support Brace

Slide the square drive shaft through the centre pivot holes of the side actions. Position the support brace over the shaft and fit the drive link brackets. Use 4 × 32mm bolts in the four holes nearest the centre and 4 × 25mm bolts in the outer holes.

Important: Before tightening, ensure the side actions and mechanism are fully retracted, the support brace faces down toward the floor, and the hex bolt heads face into the seat cavity. Then tighten.

Step Five – Attach the Actuator End Bracket

Fix the actuator end bracket to the front base frame using 4 × 16mm bolts and 4 × lock nuts.

Step Six – Fit Glide Feet

Install the 4 × glide feet with lock nuts. Tighten securely.

Step Seven – Fit the Actuator and Align the Drive

Set the mechanism to fully retracted. Ensure the actuator is fully retracted.

  • Front (clevis) end: Rest the actuator clevis in the actuator end bracket mount (no fixing through the clevis).
  • Rear mount: Bolt the rear of the actuator to the rear base rail using 2 × silver bolts.
  • Link to the drive: Connect the actuator’s white slider block to the drive link brackets using 4 bolts in total:
    • 2 × silver thread screws into the front two holes of the white slider block (the block has six holes; only the front two are used).
    • 2 × larger gauge silver bolts into the centre holes of the white slider block to secure the drive link brackets.

Make sure the drive link brackets are positioned correctly on the white slider block so the mechanism will fully open and fully close without binding. Once alignment is correct, tighten all fixings.

Step Eight – Install the Mechanism into the Furniture

Lift the complete mechanism (with actuator fitted) into the recliner seat frame. Seat it correctly on the rails and secure through the pre-drilled mounting points. Confirm the mechanism sits square and centred.

Step Nine – Make the Electrical Connections

  1. Connect the 2.3m OI extension lead between the actuator and the transformer.
  2. Plug the 2-button wired remote into the actuator control port.
  3. Connect the AU wall plug to the transformer, then plug into a room power point.

Route all cables away from moving parts and secure with zip ties (not supplied). Leave a small service loop at each connection to prevent strain.

Step Ten – Final Checks and Commissioning

  • With no one seated, run the recliner through a full open and close cycle using the remote. Listen for any rubbing or binding.
  • Re-check all fasteners on the base bars, stabilisers, drive shaft, support brace, actuator mounts and drive link brackets.
  • Confirm all wiring is clipped back and clear of the mechanism through the entire travel.
  • Fit or adjust the KD backrest brackets if required, then test again with light load.
  • Position the recliner to its normal location and verify close-to-wall clearance during operation.
