How To: Install and Use the Dewert Okin Classic 27760 Handset

You can do it. Replacing a bed remote is a quick DIY job that most customers complete in a few minutes with no prior experience. Follow the steps below to identify, install and test your new handset safely.

What You Will Need

  • Your new Dewert Okin Classic 27760 handset.
  • Access to the bed’s control box or actuator plug (usually under the bed base).
  • A torch or phone light (optional, for locating the socket).
  • Your phone or camera to take a quick photo before you start.

Before You Start: Check Compatibility

  1. Confirm the plug type: This handset uses a 90° angled 5-pin DIN male plug. Count the pins on your existing plug to ensure it is 5-pin.
  2. Check your actuator or control box: Commonly used with the Dewert 1B Bed Actuator (45402) and other Dewert or Okin systems that accept a 5-pin handset.
  3. Match the button layout: Six buttons arranged in three rows (head up/down, head + foot up/down, foot up/down).

Installation Steps

  1. Unplug mains power from the bed or switch the wall outlet off. Wait 30 seconds.
  2. Practice safe lifting: If you need to move or tilt the bed to access the control box, ask for help. Adjustable beds can be heavy.
  3. Take a photo of the existing connections before unplugging anything. This helps ensure you reconnect everything correctly.
  4. Locate the handset socket on the control box or actuator under the bed. It will match a 5-pin DIN port.
  5. Disconnect the old handset by gently pulling the existing 5-pin plug straight out. Do not twist the pins.
  6. Connect the new handset: Align the notch on the 90° plug with the port and push firmly until fully seated.
  7. Restore power at the wall and ensure all cables are clear of moving parts.

Button Functions

  • Top row: Head Up (left) and Head Down (right).
  • Middle row: Head and Foot Up (left) and Head and Foot Down (right) for simultaneous movement.
  • Bottom row: Foot Up (left) and Foot Down (right).

Testing After Installation

  1. Press Head Up and confirm the head section rises smoothly. Release to stop.
  2. Press Foot Up and confirm the foot section rises. Release to stop.
  3. Press a combined button to verify both sections move together.
  4. If a section does not move, see Troubleshooting below.

Using the Storage Hook

This handset includes a non-retractable storage hook. Open the hook and seat it on a convenient rail or loop on the bed frame (or mount a small cup hook on your bedside if preferred). Once opened the hook remains fixed in the open position.

Cable Care

  • The lead has a coiled section of approximately 500 mm and a total relaxed length of about 1.88 m.
  • Route the cable so it cannot catch on moving parts. Avoid sharp bends and pinching under castors or legs.
  • Do not pull the bed by the cable. Always grasp the handset body when using.

Safety Notes

  • Always isolate power before connecting or disconnecting plugs.
  • Practice safe lifting if moving the bed frame to access the control box.
  • Keep hands, pets and cables clear of moving mechanisms during testing.
  • Do not open the handset casing. Internal repairs should be carried out by qualified technicians.

Troubleshooting

  • No movement on any button: Check wall outlet power and any inline power supply. Confirm the 5-pin plug is fully seated. Try another outlet.
  • Head works but foot does not (or vice versa): Check actuator cables from the control box to each motor. Ensure no cable is loose or damaged.
  • Buttons are reversed on your bed: Some control boxes allow channel reassignment. If your bed moves in the opposite section to the button pressed, contact us for guidance.
  • Intermittent operation: Inspect the coiled lead for crushing or cuts and re-seat the plug.

FAQs

FAQs

How do I know if this remote will fit my adjustable bed?

This handset suits beds using Dewert or Okin actuators with a 5-pin DIN plug, including the Dewert 1B Bed Actuator (45402). Check your existing plug — it should have 5 metal pins in a circular pattern and match the 90-degree angled connector on this remote. If unsure, take a photo and contact us for help.

My old remote looks similar but has a different part number. Will this still work?

Yes, in many cases it will. Dewert and Okin use similar control systems, so as long as the plug type, number of pins, and button layout match, it should be compatible. If your old handset has a different plug (for example, 8-pin or 13-pin) it will not be suitable.

Can I install this replacement remote myself?

Installation is DIY-friendly. Simply unplug the old handset, plug this one in, and test it — no tools, wiring, or setup required. Just remember to switch off power before connecting and practice safe lifting if you need to access under the bed.

What does each button do?

There are six buttons arranged in three rows: top row controls the head section up/down, middle row raises or lowers head and foot together, and bottom row moves the foot section up/down. The icons on the handset face match these directions for easy use.

What should I do if the new handset doesn’t work after plugging it in?

First, ensure the 5-pin plug is fully seated in the control box and that power to the bed is switched on. Check for any cable damage or loose actuator connections. If it still doesn’t operate, try your old remote (if available) to confirm the actuator is functioning. If problems continue, contact our support team — we’re here to help you troubleshoot.

Super easy to deal with. Diagnosed a bad controller on my electric lounge and saved alot of money buying it in Australia from a reputable company and installing it myself. Highly recommend

Swapped out a motor controller of our King Living recliner at probably half the cost of the call out fee of the sofa company. Will definitely come back if I need any parts.
