Description

Adjustable Headrest Ratchet Mechanism – Left & Right Bracket Set with Mounting Posts

This adjustable headrest ratchet mechanism set is supplied as a matched left and right pair, suitable for chairs, recliners, lounges and sofas with manually adjustable headrests. Manufactured from silver metal, these quiet ratchet-style brackets provide 46 fixed adjustment positions and are commonly used as a replacement for worn, slipping or broken headrest mechanisms.

The set includes two chrome threaded mounting posts, creating a secure and stable mounting system between the upholstered headrest and the furniture backrest. Designed for durability and smooth movement, this mechanism restores proper headrest support and controlled adjustment.

46 Position Quiet Ratchet Style Headrest Mechanism

Each mechanism features a smooth and quiet ratcheting action with 46 distinct locking positions, allowing fine adjustment of the headrest angle. The ratchet system is fully mechanical, requiring no motors, cables, springs or gas struts, making it a reliable long-term solution for manual adjustable headrests.

This style of mechanism is commonly found in modern lounges, recliners and seating furniture where controlled headrest positioning is required without electrical components.

Mounting & Fitment Details – Check Before Ordering

Each ratchet bracket is 160mm long and features 8 fixing holes (side and front profiles) to attach the upholstered headrest. Two oversized holes allow minor height and alignment adjustment, helping accommodate small variations between furniture frames.

The set includes two chrome threaded mounting posts that accept a 12mm round pole and lock securely using an internal retaining clip. Each post has a 38mm collar (3.7mm thick) and installs directly into the backrest frame via a threaded fit. A 12mm Allen key is required for installation (not supplied). Recommended backrest hole size is 66mm deep x 17.5mm wide.

Once installed, the headrest pole locks firmly into place and cannot lift back out unless the retaining clip is removed. As adjustable headrest mechanisms vary by size and mounting style, we recommend checking your existing measurements before ordering. If you need help confirming compatibility, our support team is happy to assist.

How To Replace an Adjustable Headrest Ratchet Mechanism

Safety first: This repair involves lifting and handling heavy furniture components. Use safe lifting techniques, work on a stable surface, and ask a second person for help if needed. Keep fingers clear of moving joints and pinch points at all times.

Before you start: Take clear before photos of the headrest, both sides of the mechanism, and every fixing point (including screws and hole positions). These photos are extremely helpful when reassembling.

Tools You May Need

  • Phillips head screwdriver (or the screwdriver type used by your furniture screws)
  • Socket or spanner set (if your furniture uses bolts instead of screws)
  • 12mm Allen key (required to install the threaded mounting posts, not supplied)
  • Small flathead screwdriver or pick tool (optional, for removing retaining clips if required)
  • Soft blanket or cardboard to protect flooring and upholstery

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Prepare your work area. Clear a spacious area and place a blanket or cardboard down to protect the headrest and furniture frame.
  2. Access the mechanism. Unzip or unfasten the rear cover panel of the backrest (or remove the dust cover if applicable) to expose the internal headrest mechanism and mounting area.
  3. Take more reference photos. Photograph both sides of the mechanism, the position of the headrest bracket, and the location of every screw/bolt before removal.
  4. Support the headrest. Hold the headrest firmly (or have a helper support it) so it cannot drop or twist while you remove fixings.
  5. Remove the headrest fixings. Undo the screws/bolts securing the upholstered headrest to the left and right ratchet brackets. Keep all fixings together in a container.
  6. Remove the old mechanisms. Undo the fixings holding the old left and right mechanisms in position. Carefully remove the mechanisms from the headrest assembly.
  7. Check the mounting posts. If your furniture uses threaded mounting posts, inspect the existing posts for wear or looseness. Replace with the supplied posts if required.
  8. Install the threaded mounting posts (if replacing). Using a 12mm Allen key, screw each mounting post into the backrest frame until fully seated and secure. Confirm the post sits straight and tight.
  9. Attach the new left and right mechanisms. Fit the new mechanisms in the same orientation as the originals (left to left, right to right). Secure with the original screws/bolts. Do not fully tighten until alignment is confirmed.
  10. Mount the headrest to the brackets. Line up the upholstered headrest with the bracket holes. Use the multiple fixing holes to match your original mounting position. If needed, use the oversized holes for minor height/alignment adjustment.
  11. Insert the headrest poles into the mounting posts. Push the poles down into the posts until they pass the retaining clip and lock in. You should feel the pole seat securely once it clicks past the clip.
  12. Tighten and test. Once everything is aligned, tighten all screws/bolts firmly. Slowly test the headrest movement through several positions to confirm smooth, even operation on both sides.
  13. Refit the cover. Reinstall the rear cover panel or dust cover and confirm there are no loose parts or rubbing fabric.

Important Notes

  • Match left and right: These mechanisms are handed. Ensure the left and right sides are installed on the correct sides.
  • Retaining clip lock: Once the pole is inserted past the retaining clip, it will not lift back out unless the retaining clip is removed.
  • Reset behaviour: If your headrest will not lay flat, it may need to be lifted fully through all ratchet positions to reset before it can close.

FAQs

FAQs

Is this adjustable headrest mechanism sold as a left and right set?

Yes. This product is supplied as a matched pair, including one left-hand and one right-hand ratchet mechanism, along with two mounting posts. Adjustable headrests require both sides to work together correctly, so they should always be replaced as a pair.

What types of furniture is this headrest mechanism suitable for?

This adjustable headrest ratchet mechanism is suitable for chairs, recliners, lounges and sofas that use a manual ratchet-style adjustable headrest. Compatibility depends on measurements and mounting style, so checking your existing mechanism before ordering is important.

Does this mechanism allow the headrest to lay flat?

Yes, but the headrest must be lifted fully through all ratchet positions before it can return to the flat position. If the headrest is part-way up, it will not push flat until it has been lifted past the final position to reset.

Is this a do-it-yourself replacement?

Yes. Replacing an adjustable headrest mechanism is generally DIY-friendly with basic hand tools and careful measuring. No electrics, motors or gas struts are involved. An Allen key (12mm) is required to install the mounting posts and is not supplied.

How do I know if this is the right replacement for my furniture?

Adjustable headrest mechanisms can vary by bracket length, fixing hole layout, pole size and mounting post depth. We recommend comparing your existing mechanism measurements to the specifications listed. If you’re unsure, contact our support team and we’ll help you confirm the correct replacement before ordering.
