Footrest Spring Measuring Guide
Please see our footrest release spring measuring guide for measuring the spring in its closed position so you can easily identify if you need the 180mm or 160mm replacement.
160mm Recliner Footrest Release Spring – Universal Fit
This 160mm metal tension spring is designed to aid in raising and lowering the footrest on manual recliners. Equipped with hooks on both ends, it fits numerous recliner mechanisms (including those from Leggett & Platt and RMT), ensuring seamless compatibility with most popular brands. Simply remove your old spring, confirm the 160mm length, and fit this universal replacement.
Also Available in a 180mm Length
If your spring is longer then it’s likely the 180mm length version (click here) which we’ve also got. Both 160mm and 180mm are the two standard sizes found on most recliner release mechanisms. All measurements are taken when the spring is in the closed position:
- Overall length 160mm (approx) and Coiled length 88mm (without plastic sheath covers)
- Overall length 180mm (approx) and Coiled length 103mm (with plastic sheath covers)

Replacing your recliner’s footrest release spring is a simple DIY task. Follow these steps to identify, remove, and install the new spring.
Step 1: Identify & Remove the Broken Spring
- Locate the Spring: Find the footrest release spring beneath the recliner seat, attached to hooks on the mechanism.
- Inspect & Measure: Check for breaks or wear. Measure the spring’s total length (closed position)—typically 160mm or 180mm.
- Remove the Spring: Use pliers to unhook the spring from both ends carefully. Take photos of its placement for reference.
Step 2: Order the Replacement Spring
- Match the Size: Use your measurements to order the correct size spring (160mm or 180mm) from Sofa Rehab.
- Consult the Guide: Refer to the Footrest Release Spring Measuring Guide for additional help.
Step 3: Install the New Spring
- Prepare the Recliner: Tilt the recliner back for easy access to the mechanism.
- Attach One Hook: Use pliers to secure one end of the spring to the first attachment point.
- Stretch & Secure: Pull the other end into place and hook it securely.
Step 4: Test the Footrest
- Restore Upright Position: Set the recliner upright and test the footrest by opening and closing it.
- Check Spring Performance: Ensure the spring is taut and the footrest operates smoothly.
