Description

Universal 700mm Heavy-Duty Recliner Mechanism – Flat Pack Kit

This genuine Leggett & Platt 400EZ series mechanism is designed for recliner chairs with a 700mm seat width (distance between the inside edges of the seat rails). Built from heavy-gauge black powder-coated steel with Delrin™ bushes and machine-pressed rivets, this close-to-the-wall action provides smooth, reliable operation with a 181kg load rating (suitable for occupant weights up to 160kg).

Supplied as a flat-pack kit with all required structural parts (excluding electrics), this mechanism can be fitted to single recliners, twin chairs, 3 seaters or sectional lounges. Suitable for left- or right-hand installations.

Measuring Your Seat Frame Width

To confirm compatibility, measure the seat frame width between the inside edges of the timber or metal rails that run front-to-back of the chair. This kit fits a 700 mm width. If your seat width measures narrower, see our 500 mm version (click here).

What’s Included in the 52-Piece Base Kit

Our standard 5331 kit comes complete with everything you need to assemble a full working mechanism (electrics not included). You will receive:

  • 2 x Side actions

  • 3 x Stabiliser bars

Why Replace a Recliner Mechanism?

Over time, recliner mechanisms can bend, rivets may pop, or support tubes become loose or broken. Replacing the complete mechanism restores the strength and smooth function of your furniture, ensuring years of reliable use.

DIY Friendly – Assemble and Save

Supplied flat pack, this mechanism requires basic handyman skills to assemble. Basic instructions are included and all parts are supplied. With only a socket set, you can build and install this mechanism in about 30 minutes. By doing it yourself, you can save $$$ on costly repairs and enjoy the satisfaction of restoring your furniture.

How To Tutorial

How To Tutorial

Assembly Instructions – 700mm Universal Leggett & Platt Recliner Mechanism (No Electrics)

Tools required: Socket set with 13mm socket, spanner, screwdriver, pliers (for zip ties).
Assembly time: Approx. 30 minutes.
Important: Assemble the mechanism outside the chair frame. Fit the actuator and electrics before installing into the furniture. KD backrest brackets are only fitted or adjusted at the final stage.

Step One – Lay Out and Identify Parts

  • 2 × side actions
  • 2 × base bars
  • 3 × stabiliser bars (2 with flat ends for front/rear, 1 with 90° folded ends for centre)
  • 1 × square drive shaft
  • 1 × support brace
  • Pair of drive link brackets
  • 1 × actuator end bracket
  • 4 × glide feet with lock nuts
  • All bolts and nuts supplied (no washers required)

Step Two – Assemble the Base Frame

Position the base bars between the side actions. Use 4 × 13mm bolts (2 each side) in the second set of holes, not the ones nearest the edge. Leave finger-tight until alignment is complete.

Step Three – Fit the Stabiliser Bars

Install the flat-ended stabiliser bars at the front and rear. Install the stabiliser with 90° folded ends in the centre position just behind where the drive shaft will sit. Each stabiliser uses 4 × 13mm bolts (2 each end).

Step Four – Install the Drive Shaft and Support Brace

Slide the square drive shaft through the centre pivot holes of the side actions. Position the support brace over the shaft and fit the drive link brackets. Use 4 × 32mm bolts in the 4 holes nearest the centre and 4 × 25mm bolts in the outer holes.

Important: Before tightening, ensure the side actions are in the fully retracted position. The support brace must face downwards toward the floor, with the hex bolt heads pointing upward into the seat cavity. Adjust if necessary, then tighten all bolts securely.

Step Five – Attach the Actuator End Bracket

Fix the actuator end bracket to the front base frame using 4 × 16mm bolts and 4 × lock nuts.

Step Six – Fit Glide Feet

Install the 4 × glide feet with lock nuts after the mechanism is fully assembled. Tighten securely.

Step Seven – Fit the Actuator and Electrics

Attach the actuator between the front actuator bracket and the drive link brackets. Ensure the actuator is fully retracted, the mechanism is fully retracted, and the drive link brackets are correctly positioned so the mechanism will fully open and close. Once aligned, tighten fixings, connect wiring and switch, and secure all cables with zip ties (not supplied).

Step Eight – Install the Mechanism into the Furniture

Place the complete mechanism with actuator and electrics fitted into the chair frame. Secure it to the seat rails using the pre-drilled holes, ensuring correct alignment.

Step Nine – Fit or Adjust KD Backrest Brackets

Once the mechanism is installed, fit the KD backrest brackets. Replace or adjust only if your furniture requires a different angle or style.

Step Ten – Final Checks

Test the recliner through its full range of motion. Ensure smooth operation with no fouling. Confirm all bolts are tight and all cables are safely secured with zip ties.

FAQs

FAQs

How do I know if the 700mm size is right for my chair?

Measure the distance between the inside edges of the recliner’s side rails. If the gap is 700mm, this is the correct mechanism. If it’s smaller, see our 500mm version.

Can I convert my manual recliner to electric with this?

Yes, this mechanism can be used to upgrade a manual recliner to electric. Keep in mind the old pull handle will no longer be needed once converted.

Does this kit come with an actuator and power supply?

No, this listing is for the mechanism only. You will need to purchase the actuator, transformer, leads and control switch separately, or choose our full kit with electrics included.

Do you supply the complete kit with electrics as well?

Yes, we stock the full package with all electrics pre-supplied. That version includes the actuator, motor, power supply and cables, ready for a direct installation.

Is the mechanism already assembled?

No, it is supplied as a flat pack kit. Assembly is straightforward with basic DIY skills using a socket set and spanner, and usually takes around 30 minutes.
