Description

Coloured Furniture Wax for Restoring and Antiquing Timber

Sofa Rehab Finishing & Restoration Wax is an Australian-made pigmented furniture wax used to restore tired dark timber, polish compatible surfaces and create aged or antiqued effects. Supplied in a 150g tin, it is made from Australian beeswax, carnauba wax and colour pigments.

Suitable for chalk-based paints, bare or stained timber, and compatible sealed or polished finishes, the wax can enrich dark colour, bring out the grain and soften the appearance of freshly painted furniture. It can also be worked into mouldings, carvings and recessed details to create intentional aged or worn-looking effects.

Choose Dark Brown or Black Finishing Wax

Choose the wax colour according to the existing furniture finish and the result you want to create:

  • Dark Brown: Best suited to warm brown, medium brown, dark brown and red-brown furniture finishes. Possible colour matches include walnut, teak, mahogany, jarrah, rosewood, merbau, dark oak and brown-stained pine. It can restore tired brown colour, enrich the appearance of dark timber and create softer brown-toned antiquing effects.
  • Black: Intended for very dark brown, espresso, charcoal, black-stained and ebonised furniture finishes. Possible colour matches include ebony-style finishes, wenge-coloured furniture, black-stained oak, very dark walnut and other dark-stained timber. It creates a stronger darkening effect and can be used to restore black finishes or add more dramatic antiquing and distressed-looking detail.

These timber and finish names are colour guides only, not guaranteed matches or an indication that the wax can only be used on those timber species. The result will vary according to the existing stain, coating, timber colour, age, grain, porosity, lighting and amount of wax applied. Always test the wax in an inconspicuous area first and build the finish gradually using light layers.

Is Finishing & Restoration Wax Right for Your Project?

This wax is intended for broad surface restoration, polishing and decorative finishing. It can help refresh faded-looking furniture, make dark finishes appear richer, highlight timber grain and add visual depth to carved or detailed furniture.

It is not a timber filler, opaque paint or structural repair product. Scratches, chips, cracks or holes with missing material may first require a Timber Repair Crayon (click Here)  or Beeswax Filler Stick (click here). For a narrow scratch where colour has been removed but little or no material is missing, consider a Miller Scratch Fix Repair Pen (click here).

Restore and Finish Your Furniture Yourself

Apply the wax sparingly with a lint-free cloth, working in circular motions and following the grain. Wait 15 minutes, then buff the surface with a soft cloth. Reapply in light layers as required to gradually build the colour and finish.

A suitable brush can be used when working the wax into mouldings, carved details and recessed areas. With simple application tools and a controlled approach, you can restore and personalise tired furniture yourself while enjoying the satisfaction of a job well done.

How to Apply Finishing & Restoration Wax

Before You Begin: Confirm the wax is suitable for the surface and test it in a small, inconspicuous area. The finished colour can vary depending on the existing timber colour, stain, coating, grain, porosity and amount of wax applied.

  1. Test the Colour: Apply a small amount of wax to a hidden area and assess the colour and finish before proceeding with visible surfaces.
  2. Apply the Wax: Apply a small amount with a lint-free cloth, working in circular motions and following the direction of the timber grain.
  3. Wait 15 Minutes: Allow the applied wax to sit on the surface for 15 minutes before buffing.
  4. Buff the Surface: Buff the wax with a clean, soft cloth until the desired finish and sheen are achieved.
  5. Reapply as Required: Build the colour and finish gradually using additional light layers. Repeat the application and buffing process as required.

Applying Wax to Mouldings and Carved Details

When antiquing furniture or working with mouldings, carvings and recessed details, use a suitable brush to work the wax into the textured areas. Apply the wax in light layers so you can gradually control the colour and aged effect.

Choosing the Right Colour

  • Dark Brown: Recommended for dark to very dark brown timber.
  • Black: Recommended for dark brown to black timber.

Colour names are a guide only and do not guarantee an exact match. Timber, stains and finishes can vary with species, age, condition, coating and lighting, so always test first.

Safety and Storage

  • For indoor use only.
  • Wear protective gloves and eye protection during use.
  • Avoid contact with eyes and skin.
  • Do not ingest.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Keep out of reach of children.

First Aid: If the wax contacts the skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water. If it contacts the eyes, rinse with water and seek medical advice if irritation persists.

FAQs

FAQs

What is finishing and restoration wax used for?

Sofa Rehab Finishing & Restoration Wax is used to restore tired colour, polish dark timber and create aged, distressed or antiqued furniture effects. It can also bring out timber grain and highlight mouldings, carvings and recessed details.

Can I use finishing wax on chalk paint and painted furniture?

Yes. The wax is suitable for chalk-based paints, as well as bare or stained timber and compatible sealed or polished finishes. A brush can help work the coloured wax into textured paintwork, mouldings and carved areas when creating an antiqued finish. Always test it on an inconspicuous area first.

Should I choose Dark Brown or Black furniture wax?

Choose Dark Brown for dark to very dark brown timber. Choose Black for dark brown to black timber or when you want a stronger darkened or black antiquing effect. The finished colour will vary with the existing stain, coating, grain, porosity and amount applied, so testing first is essential.

How do I apply Sofa Rehab Finishing & Restoration Wax?

Apply a small amount with a lint-free cloth, working in circular motions and following the grain. Wait 15 minutes, then buff with a soft cloth. Reapply in light layers as required. Use a suitable brush when working the wax into mouldings, carvings or recessed details.

Will finishing wax fill scratches, chips or cracks in timber?

No. Finishing & Restoration Wax is intended for surface colouring, polishing and decorative finishing rather than filling missing material. Use a timber touch-up pen for marks where colour has been removed, a repair crayon for shallow defects, or a firmer beeswax filler stick for deeper scratches, cracks and small chips.

First time dealing with this company. The replacement part was well priced, does the job perfectly and arrived without fuss in what I would consider to be short time given current delivery issues in general. No hesitation to give this company further business if the need arises.
