Tools and Preparation
You will need: Long-nose pliers, 10 mm spanner or socket (if your chair uses bolts), cable ties, soft blanket or cardboard to protect the floor.
Photo first: Before you unplug anything, take clear photos of the actuator label, the yellow 8 pin DIN plug orientation, and how the cable is routed and clipped. If wires are similar colours, add masking tape labels so you can match them during reassembly.
Safety First (Power and Lifting)
- Unplug the chair from the wall and disconnect the transformer from the IO extension lead. Remove any batteries if a battery backup is fitted.
- Let the system sit for 2 to 3 minutes so any stored charge can dissipate.
- Clear the work area of obstacles. Protect the floor with a blanket or cardboard.
- Use safe lifting technique. Bend at the knees, keep your back straight, and lift with your legs. The safest approach is two people tilting the chair gently onto its side. Do not lift by the footrest or moving mechanism.
- Stabilise the recliner on its side so it cannot rock. Keep hands clear of pinch points in the mechanism.
Step by Step Replacement
- Identify the actuator. Locate the linear actuator under the chair. Confirm the label shows Okin Betadrive 90923 (also referenced as 78969 and La Z Boy 10.000079).
- Note the positions. Take a photo of each mounting point and the cable path. If the actuator has adjustable clevis or a moving block, note its position along the lead screw.
- Disconnect the cable. Follow the actuator lead to the yellow 8 pin DIN plug. Press any locking tab, then pull straight to separate. Do not twist the pins.
- Release cable clips. Snip or unclip any cable ties or P clips that secure the actuator lead to the frame. Keep fixings for reuse.
- Remove rear mount. At the base end of the actuator, remove the bolt, nut, or R-clip and pin (fastener type varies by model). Support the actuator as you remove the fastener.
- Remove front mount. At the rod end, remove the bolt or clevis pin that connects to the mechanism arm. Watch for washers or spacers and keep them in order.
- Transfer hardware. Compare the new actuator to the old one. Transfer any brackets, spacers, bushes, or clevis hardware across if required.
- Set rod position. Ensure the new actuator rod is retracted to match the installation length of the old unit. If needed, briefly connect the new actuator to the transformer while the chair is still on its side and momentarily run it to retract or extend, then unplug again. Keep fingers clear of the mechanism during any movement.
- Install front mount. Fit the rod end into the mechanism arm. Reinstall the pin or bolt with any washers in the original order. Tighten snugly but do not overtighten into plastic bushes.
- Install rear mount. Align the base mount with its bracket and refit the pin or bolt. Confirm the actuator sits square with no binding.
- Route and secure cable. Route the lead along the original path away from moving parts. Reuse clips and add cable ties where needed. Leave a small service loop at the plug to avoid strain.
- Reconnect the plug. Align the yellow 8 pin DIN keys as per your photo and push together fully until seated. Do not force it.
Testing
- With the recliner still on its side and clear of obstructions, plug the transformer into the wall and connect the IO lead.
- Operate the chair for a short movement only to confirm direction and smooth travel. If movement is reversed, check any A B mode switch on your handset if fitted, then retest.
- Unplug power again. Return the chair upright using safe lifting technique.
- Final test through a full range of motion. Listen for unusual noises and ensure cables do not rub or stretch.

FAQs
FAQs
How do I know if this is the right actuator for my chair?
Check the label on your existing motor. If it shows Okin Betadrive 90923, Okin Betadrive 78969, or La-Z-Boy part number 10.000079, then this is the correct replacement. You can also confirm by the distinctive yellow 8-pin DIN plug
Can I install this actuator myself?
Yes! This is a DIY-friendly repair. With just basic hand tools, you can swap the motor in under 30 minutes. We recommend taking photos before removing the old one so you can route the new cable the same way.
Do I need to buy any extra parts with this actuator?
In most cases, no. The actuator comes as a complete unit. If your moving block or clevis tip is damaged, we also sell these parts separately. Ask us if you’re unsure — sometimes replacing a small component is all you need.
My actuator has stopped working — could the problem be elsewhere?
Yes, it’s possible. Issues can come from the power supply, handset switch, or cables. If your actuator label matches 90923/78969/10.000079 but you’re unsure it’s faulty, contact us with details and we’ll help you troubleshoot before buying.
What warranty do you provide?
All our actuators come with a 12-month warranty when sold new. You can buy with confidence knowing you’re getting a genuine OEM replacement backed by support from Australia’s leading supplier of recliner spare parts.
