Leather Prep Wash – Surface Preparation Solution for Repairs & Recolouring
Leather Prep Wash is a surface preparation solution used prior to leather repairs and recolouring. It is designed to remove the existing top coat and surface contaminants such as waxes, silicones and residues from and around the repair area, helping ensure that repair products bond correctly to the leather surface.
This preparation step is an essential part of the leather repair process and plays a major role in achieving durable, long-lasting results when using Sofa Rehab leather repair products.
An Important Step Before Leather Repairs and Painting
Before applying leather fillers, colourants or Leather & Vinyl Paint, the leather surface must be properly prepared. Leather Prep Wash cleans the surface and removes residues that can interfere with adhesion, reducing the risk of peeling, patchy coverage or premature wear.
For best results, Leather Prep Wash is recommended prior to using all Sofa Rehab leather repair products and is included in our Essentials Leather Repair Kits, Crack Repair Kit and Leather Touch Up Kit.
What Leather Prep Wash Does (And What It Does Not Do)
Leather Prep Wash works on the surface of the leather to remove visible and invisible contaminants such as waxes, silicones and surface oils. These contaminants are often left behind from previous cleaning products, conditioners or everyday use and can prevent repair products from bonding properly.
Due to the porous nature of leather, oils and grease can be absorbed deep into the leather structure. Leather Prep Wash helps remove these substances from the surface but does not draw absorbed oils out of the leather.
Available Sizes to Suit Your Repair Project
Leather Prep Wash is available in multiple sizes so you can choose the right amount for your project: – 50ml size for small repairs and spot preparation – 125ml size for armrests, headrests and moderate repair areas – 250ml size for larger repairs or multiple projects
Choosing the correct size helps avoid waste while ensuring you have enough product to prepare the surface properly.
You Can Do It Yourself and Save
Preparing leather correctly doesn’t require professional experience. With Leather Prep Wash, a cloth and a little patience, you can confidently prepare your leather for repair or recolouring at home.
Following the correct preparation steps helps ensure better adhesion, longer-lasting results and the satisfaction of completing a successful DIY repair yourself. If you have any questions about preparation, product selection or your specific repair, our support team is always here to help.

FAQs
FAQs
What is Leather Prep Wash used for?
Leather Prep Wash is used to prepare the leather surface before repairs or recolouring. It removes the existing top coat and surface contaminants such as waxes, silicones and residues so that repair products, colourants and paints can bond properly to the leather.
Is Leather Prep Wash the same as a leather cleaner?
No. Leather Prep Wash is not a general-purpose leather cleaner or maintenance product. It is a surface preparation solution used as part of the leather repair process. It is designed to be used before repairs or painting, not for regular cleaning or conditioning.
Does Leather Prep Wash remove oil from inside the leather?
Leather Prep Wash works on the surface of the leather only. It helps remove surface oils and contaminants but cannot draw oils that have been absorbed deep into the leather structure. This is normal for leather and does not affect its suitability as a preparation step.
When should I use Leather Prep Wash in my repair process?
Leather Prep Wash should be used before applying any Sofa Rehab leather repair products, including fillers, colourants, Leather & Vinyl Paint and repair kits. It is an important preparation step and should be completed thoroughly before moving on to the next stage of your repair.
Is Leather Prep Wash suitable for all leather types?
Leather Prep Wash is suitable for most types of leather used in furniture, including pigmented, semi-aniline and aniline leather with caution. It is not suitable for nubuck or suede leather.
