Description

Leather Preparation Solution for Repairs & Recolouring

Leather Prep Wash is a water-based surface preparation solution used before leather and vinyl repairs and recolouring. It helps remove the existing top coat and surface contaminants such as waxes, silicones and residues from around the repair area, helping repair products bond to the prepared surface.

This 250ml spray bottle is a practical choice for preparing larger areas or carrying out several repairs. Buy it separately if you already have the other repair materials, or choose the additional fillers and colourants needed for your repair.

An Important Step Before Leather Repairs and Painting

Before applying leather fillers, colourants or Leather & Vinyl Paint, the leather surface must be properly prepared. Leather Prep Wash cleans the surface and removes residues that can interfere with adhesion, reducing the risk of peeling, patchy coverage or premature wear.

Leather Prep Wash is included in our Essentials Leather Repair Kits, Crack Repair Kit and Leather Touch Up Kit. Follow the preparation instructions for your chosen repair products, including any sanding required before applying filler or colourant.

What Leather Prep Wash Does (And What It Does Not Do)

Leather Prep Wash works on the surface of the leather to remove visible and invisible contaminants such as waxes, silicones and surface oils. These contaminants are often left behind from previous cleaning products, conditioners or everyday use and can prevent repair products from bonding properly. Because it is designed to prepare the finish for repair or recolouring, Leather Prep Wash should not be used for routine leather cleaning or conditioning.

Due to the porous nature of leather, oils and grease can be absorbed deep into the leather structure. Leather Prep Wash helps remove these substances from the surface but does not draw absorbed oils out of the leather.

250ml Coverage & Choosing the Right Bottle

The 250ml bottle is suited to larger preparation areas, several repair sections or multiple projects. The amount needed depends on the area being prepared and how many passes are required to remove the existing coating and surface contaminants.

For a small repair or spot preparation, our 50ml Leather Prep Wash provides a smaller quantity of the same preparation solution. If you’re unsure which size suits your repair, contact us for advice.

How To Use Leather Prep Wash

These instructions apply to both the 50ml and 250ml Leather Prep Wash. Use it to prepare leather and vinyl surfaces before repairs or recolouring, helping remove the existing top coat and surface contaminants that can interfere with adhesion.

Take time with the preparation stage and follow the instructions for the filler, colourant or repair kit you will be using.

What You'll Need and Before You Start

Preparation Product 50ml or 250ml Leather Prep Wash with the fitted spritzer pump
Application Cloth A clean cloth, ideally microfibre, with additional clean cloths available if needed
Personal Protection Protective gloves and eye protection, as directed on the bottle

Check that your chosen repair products are suitable for the material and test in an inconspicuous area before proceeding. Follow the safety instructions on the bottle.

Leather Suitability: Do not use on nubuck or suede. For aniline leather, contact us before starting so we can advise on the preparation appropriate to your repair. If you are unsure of the material, see our guide to identifying your leather type.

Step 1: Apply the Leather Prep Wash

  1. Spray Leather Prep Wash onto and around the repair area.
  2. Apply enough to lightly wet the surface without oversaturating the leather.

Step 2: Wipe the Surface

  1. Wipe over the area with the cloth, using controlled pressure to help remove the existing top coat, waxes, silicones and surface residues.
  2. Turn the cloth to a clean section as it collects residues, or replace it with a clean cloth when needed.
  3. Work gently if the existing coating is unstable. Avoid aggressive scrubbing.

Step 3: Repeat Where Needed

Repeat the spray-and-wipe process where further preparation is needed. Areas with a build-up of surface contaminants may require several passes.

Persistent Oily or Greasy Areas: Leather Prep Wash helps remove surface oils but does not draw out oils absorbed into the leather. If oily or greasy patches remain, contact us for advice before continuing with the repair.

Step 4: Allow to Dry Before Continuing

  1. Allow the prepared area to dry fully before applying filler, colourant or other repair products.
  2. Follow the instructions for your chosen repair products, including any sanding or additional preparation required.
  3. If sanding is required, remove the sanding dust as directed and make sure the surface is dry before moving to the next stage.

If you need help with surface preparation or choosing the next product for your repair, contact our team for advice.

I purchased some items to fix a rip in my sofa. It really is as easy as they say in the videos. I have extended the live of my sofa for just 5 mins of work and a small cost. Great products.

First time dealing with this company. The replacement part was well priced, does the job perfectly and arrived without fuss in what I would consider to be short time given current delivery issues in general. No hesitation to give this company further business if the need arises.

This was probably the most helpful company I have dealt with in a long time. My email was answered immediately. Txt messages followed asking for more info. They asked for pics of where we thought the problem was. They were spot on with what the problem was.
