Heavy Gauge 117mm Recliner Lock Down Spring

Made with a 2.4mm wire gauge for extra durability, this spring is particularly suitable for recliners that get a lot of use or that originally came with a thicker spring. It locks the footrest in the closed position so it won’t pop open on its own. Simply swap out your old spring with this replacement.

Also Available in Standard Gauge Version

More common on newer recliners, or if you just prefer a lighter tension, the Standard 117mm Lock Down Spring (click here) version is also available. Both gauge options are interchangeable and fit the same mechanism. The choice comes down to your preference of durability & cost. Here’s a guide to help you compare between the two:

  • 117mm Standard Lockdown Spring: Features a 2.1mm wire gauge and comes with a red foam insert. Found on most modern recliners.
  • 117mm Heavy Gauge Lockdown Spring: Features a thicker 2.4mm wire gauge and a yellow foam insert. Found on older model recliner and cross-compatible for anyone wanting a stronger replacement.

How To Tutorial

How To Tutorial

Replacing the lock down spring is a simple DIY task that ensures your recliner footrest stays closed until you’re ready to recline. Follow the steps below to safely remove the old spring and install a new one (either standard or heavy gauge).

Step 1: Prepare Your Recliner

  • Lay a drop sheet to protect the floor and carefully tilt the recliner on its side or front, using safe lifting techniques.
  • Gather pliers and any other tools you may need for the task.

Step 2: Remove the Old Spring

  • Locate the broken or worn lock down spring under the seat. If it’s missing, refer to another recliner (if available) for placement.
  • Open the footrest using the handle or lever and carefully unhook the spring with pliers. Tip: Take a photo for reference before removing the spring.

Step 3: Install the New Spring

  • Hook one end of the replacement spring onto the seat frame or designated peg.
  • Stretch the spring with pliers and secure the other end to the footrest mechanism. Use the hole or peg with visible signs of wear for correct positioning. Caution: The spring is under tension, so handle it carefully.

Step 4: Test and Adjust

  • Close the footrest and ensure it locks securely with a firm “click.”
  • If it doesn’t lock properly, try repositioning the spring in a different hole.
  • Set the recliner upright and fully test the footrest by opening and closing it.

Additional Tips

Standard vs Heavy Gauge is a choice based on your preference for strength and durability, both are intercompatible. Need Help? Refer to our Lock Down Spring Measuring Guide (click here) or contact us for support.
