Description

Leather Crack Filler for Cracked, Crazed & Worn Leather Surfaces

Our Leather Crack Filler is a flexible, easy-to-use repair compound designed to restore cracked, crazed and lightly damaged leather or vinyl surfaces. Suitable for light, medium and heavy surface cracking, this filler smooths out imperfections and creates a strong, flexible base ready for colouring. Once dry, it can be sanded and painted, making it ideal for high traffic areas such as seats, armrests and headrests.

The filler is off-white in colour and works across all standard leather and vinyl types (excluding suede and nubuck). Available in both 100g and 250g tubs, you can choose the size that best suits your repair project.

Before using the leather crack filler, we strongly recommend that you apply Leather Prep Wash (click here) to clean the surface, and then Leather Binder (click here) to secure the cracks for stronger & longer lasting repairs, and finally our Leather & Vinyl Repair Paints (click here) to colour over the filler, blending in the repairs.

What is Surface Crack Filler?

Leather Surface Crack Filler is a low viscosity type leather filler designed to be self levelling and sink into very fine surface cracks and scratches found on heavily used leather and vinyl surfaces, such as lounge seat cushions. Dries to an off white colour but can be tinted using Leather & Vinyl Paints prior to application to achieve a closer colour match. The crack filler remains flexible and will not crack or fall out as it stretches and flexes with the surface. Having an adhesive within the filler creates an extremely strong bond with the leather or vinyl. For the most long lasting repair we strongly recommend using Leather Binder (click here) before applying the Surface Surface Crack Filler.

How To

How To

To achieve a successful repair, follow the steps below, in numerical order.
Always start with step 1, 2, 3 etc…

1) Prep Wash – Spray the area in and around the repair, then use the microfibre cloth to remove any dirt, oils, or contaminants. Allow the surface to dry completely. Next, apply Prep Wash to the area and lightly abrade the clear coat using 600-grit paper.

2) Trim – Remove any frayed, loose or unwanted fibres

3) Bond – Make sure the surfaces are completely dry. Apply glue to any lifted edges or splits, then press them together and hold until the glue begins to set. A hairdryer can be used to speed up the process. Allow the glue to cure for at least 24 hours before moving on to the next step to ensure maximum strength.

4) Binder
a) Using the sponge, dab two thin coats onto the cracked areas, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Apply firm pressure to work the binder into the cracks. A hairdryer can be used to speed up drying.

b) For fine cracks, continue applying additional coats until the surface is level, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Once all cracks are filled, move on to step 7.

5) Crack Filler
a) Using the supplied palette knife, spread thin layers of filler over the cracks, removing any excess as you go. Let each coat dry before applying the next. For deeper cracks, continue building up layers until the surface is level. A hairdryer may be used to speed up drying.

b) Sand the areas level and smooth with the 600 grade grit paper

6) Wipe Clean – Lightly dampen the microfibre cloth with water or prep wash, then wipe over the repair area. Allow it to dry completely before proceeding.

7) Colourant – Use a cotton tip or touch-up sponge to dab, wipe, or brush the colourant on in thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry fully before applying the next. A hairdryer can be used to speed up drying. Continue until full coverage is achieved, applying no more than three coats.
Tip – feather the repair outwards during application as a final step and gently massage the area to relax the surface and blend in.

YOU MUST ALLOW AT LEAST 14 DAYS BEFORE USING ANY CLEANING OR MOISTURISER PRODUCTS. ALSO NOTE YOU MAY EXPERIENCE SLIGHT COLOUR BLEED ON TO THE CLOTH WHEN CLEANING OR MOISTURISING. THIS IS NORMAL AND CAN BE EXPECTED FOR THE FIRST 2 OR 3 USES

  1. Before commencing any repair, always pre test the products in an inconspicuous area
  2. Please note any use of our products will only be successful on a real leather or vinyl surface that is in fair/good condition, clean and free from contaminant such as oils, dirt and grime.

FAQs

FAQs

What's the difference between Surface crack filler and Leather & Vinyl filler paste?

Surface crack filler is used to fix areas of cracking and crazes leather surface. The Leather and Vinyl filler is used to repair deeper holes, rips and tears etc.

Do I need anything else other than the Surface crack filler?

Yes. The Surface crack filler is just one part of the repair process, to successfully repair surface cracks you will need to use prep wash, binder and colourant. Or purchase the Leather Crack repair kit and have it all in one handy kit.

Can Surface Crack Filler be used on Vinyl or faux leather?

Yes its compatible. NOTE- It will not fix delaminating on Faux leather though.

What happens if I just use Surface crack filler on its own?

The filler will not fix the cracking issue. If no binder is used then there is nothing stopping the cracking for deteriorating. If surface crack filler is applied and left the colour will not match the leather and you will be left with a off white patch. We always recommend using the full Leather crack kit to complete the repairs.

Surface Crack filler is not as smooth or level with the surface what can I do?

Crack filler can be sanded with wet and dry 600 or 1200 grade sand paper. Once level ensure you wipe over the area with prep wash to remove the dust before applying colour.

Does the Surface crack filler need colouring over?

Yes. The filler dries to an off white colour and will require our Leather & Vinyl paint to match in to the surrounding areas.

Will the Crack filler have a leather look?

No, the filler leaves a smooth finish and doesn't replicate the textured grain. The ideal finish of the filler is to fill just the cracks leaving the textured leather mostly untouched.

What colour is the Crack filler?

The filler dries to an off white colour. The filler can be tinted with our Leather and Vinyl paints prior to application to achieve a closer colour match.
